So… How much will the Microsoft Surface cost?
As of right now, there is no official word on how much Microsoft Surface will cost. There were some reports suggesting that the price would be $1,000+ for the cheapest version. It turns out that this information was not based on any thing from Microsoft. The only official word we have regarding Microsoft Surface price details comes from Microsoft Windows President Steven Sinofsky. See the quote after the break.
Suggested retail pricing will be announced closer to availability and is expected to be competitive with a comparable ARM tablet or Intel Ultrabook-class PC. OEMs will have cost and feature parity on Windows 8 and Windows RT.
I find it interesting that the Surface Tablets will be comparable with Ultrabooks. With Ultrabooks selling for $700 or more, I estimate that the initial Microsoft Surface price range will be $800-$1000 for the Windows Pro version. This pricing would likely be too much for most consumers to bare. I hope that the Windows RT version of the Surface will be priced similar to that of the iPad and high-end Android Tablets. The platform won’t have a chance if the Microsoft Surface price is higher than existing tablet options.
The Microsoft Surface Price not the only factor
There’s a lot of factors that will help determine the success or failure of the Microsoft Surface Tablets. I for one am interested in seeing how well the Pro Version will perform. Will it be fast? Will it be heavy? How long will the battery last? While its cost may make the Surface Pro less appealing to some, poor performance will kill any chance the platform has of succeeding.
Even if the Surface RT is competitively priced, it remains to be seen what type of development support the new platform will receive. Will there be plenty of RT apps available at launch? Will the RT Apps be as good as iPad apps and Android apps? With so many unanswered questions, I’m finding myself becoming more and more skeptical of the prospects of Microsoft Surface. I still plan to buy a Surface Pro on day one, however! 😉
