Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 to Ship Late October 2012

Looks like we won’t have to wait an extra 90 days for a Windows 8 Pro Tablet.  Lenovo just announced it’s first Windows 8 Tablet, the ThinkPad Tablet 2.  The ThinkPad Tablet 2 will be released in late October, along side the Microsoft Windows 8 release.  We initially thought only Windows RT Tablets would ship in October but that appears to not be the case.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 Specs

The specs of the ThinkPad Tablet 2 look good.  I am a little concerned that it will use an Atom processor instead of an Intel i5 processor.  By using the Atom processor, the ThinkPad Tablet 2 should be cheaper and longer lasting than the Microsoft Surface Pro.  On the other hand, the ThinkPad Tablet 2 will not be as fast as the Surface Pro.  This might not be a problem however.  The new ThinkPad will have similar specs to what we’ve seen on netbooks.  In my opinion, Netbooks perform really well for surfing the web, listening to music, or watching movies.  So if the new ThinkPad performs as well as a decently equipped netbook, and if the price is right, I think this device will be a great addition to the growing family of Windows Tablets.

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 versus Microsoft Surface Pro

How well will the ThinkPad Tablet 2 fair against the Microsoft Surface tablets?  We won’t be able to say for certain until both Windows Tablets ship.  A couple things we can assume right now is that the Microsoft Surface will be faster, but it will more expensive.  The ThinkPad should have performance on par with netbooks.  This means it will competently run Microsoft Office, web browsers, music apps, and video apps.  Thus, your buying decisions may come done to price.  Hopefully ThinkPad Tablet 2 price will be in line with the iPad, higher end Android Tablets, and higher end netbooks.  Once both devices start shipping, we’ll be sure to provide a detailed comparison of them.
