How to Turn on Siri

Turn on the Siri App the first time only requires a few simple steps.  The section below details how to turn on Siri on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. How to Turn on Siri App Change Siri Voice Gender Language for iOS7 How to Turn on Siri App, Change Siri Voice, Gender, Language for iOS7

1. Tap the “Settings” icon (you can often find it on your home screen) to access your device settings.
2. Tap “General” on the left side of the “Settings” application.
3. Location and tap “Siri” on the right part of the screen.
4. Slide the button next to “Siri” from the “off” position to the “on” position.  Siri is now enabled!
5. Make sure you have an active Internet connection.  Access to the internet is required in order to use Siri.

How to Change Siri Siri Gender

On the “Siri” settings screen above, tap “Voice Gender”.  As of this writing, there are only two options (a male’s voice and a female’s voice).  I would love for Apple to add a robot’s voice or celebrity voices.  The female voice is selected by default.

How to Change Siri Language

On the “Siri” settings screen above, tap “Language”.  As of this writing, you have the following languages and locales to pick from:

  • English: United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia
  • Spanish: United States, Mexico, Spain
  • French: France, Canada, Switzerland
  • Mandarin: China, Taiwan
  • Cantonese: Hong Kong
  • German: Germany, Switzerland
  • Italian: Italy, Switzerland
  • Japanese: Japan
  • Korean: South Korea

How to Access the Siri App

Once the Siri App is enable, you can start issuing commands by holding the Home Button.  If you have a compatible headset (or Bluetooth device), you may be able to launch Siri by pressing the Phone button.  You can also launch the Siri App by simply holding the phone up to your ear.

  1. I am disabled. Can I set Sirii to always active to do everything by voice without touching the screen.

    • Yes, at least in iOS 8. Here’s the path: Settings > General > Siri. Locate “Allow ‘Hey Siri” (more or less about the middle of the screen) and turn it on. — The only catch is it only works when the iPhone is connected to power (e.g., charging). Hopefully that is not too much of an obstacle. If so, perhaps you can use a power pack to meet the “connected to power” requirement. — From that point on, when you say “Hey Siri,” the phone responds exactly the same as if you had held down the power button to engage Siri.

  2. How do I delete a incoming call message from Siri?

  3. I have an iPod touch. Regarding the intatrucion to activate Siri by pressing the Home button, what is the Home button? So I have one?

    • Cara Drouin – the iPod Touch does not have access to Siri, unfortunately. This is due to the fact that Siri requires an iOS device to always be connected to the Internet in order to work. Since iPod Touches lack a cellular data radio, and only connect to the ‘net via wifi, Siri’s chances of working are decreased. As such, Apple elected not to include Siri features on the iPod Touch.

For future reference – the Home button in the large, round button on the bottom center of your iPod Touch.
