Best Windows Tablet in the Market?

It’s hard to pick the best Windows Tablets in the market. Most of the Windows tablets in each price range share similar features and specs. Which Windows tablet a person buys will always comes down to one or two features the person puts the priority on. As such, I suggest most people choose a device that has the feature they are most interested in. Below are some of the features you should consider.

Best Windows Tablets with a Stylus (Digitizer Pen)

As of this writing, I strongly urge Win8 tablet shoppers to by a Windows tablet with a stylus or digitizer pen. The stylus will make it easier to interact with Windows 8 while in desktop mode. This is especially true for 8 inch Windows Tablets because the operating system doesn’t scale on the smaller screens. As a result, some of the buttons are easier to use with a stylus versus a finger.

The stylus will also provide additional functionality for apps that are optimized for its use such as One Note, Fresh Paint, and Adobe Photoshop.

My top picks for Windows Tablets with a stylus include the 8-inch Asus VivoTab Note 8. If you want a 10 inch or larger tablet with stylus support, consider the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. The Dell Venue 8 Pro also offers active stylus support. However, even with corrective firmware updates, some users complain that the Dell Venue Pro stylus doesn’t work well.

Best Windows 8 Tablets by Price

Looking for the best Windows Tablet under $500? If you are mostly interested in the best Windows Tablet price, you have a lot of options. Many cheap Windows Tablets are in the $200 – $500 range these days. My favorites of the group include the Dell Venue 8 Pro, Acer Inconia W4, and Asus VivoTab Note 8. Please refer to the chart above for differentiating features. Also, keep in mind that the cheapest Windows Tablets may not include nice to have features such as HDMI ports, optional keyboards, or stylus/digitizer pens. The chart above contains a complete price list for the best Windows Tablets available.

Btw, the article Best Windows Tablets Under $500 details the cheap windows tablets I recommended from the first generation of Win8 tablets.

Best Windows Tablets with a Keyboard

To get the most out of your Windows Tablet, I suggest you consider devices that have included or optional keyboards. Keyboards are a must for interacting with legacy Windows applications. Keyboards also give Windows Tablets an edge versus Android tablets and the iPad in terms of productivity.

My top pick for Windows tablets that come with a keyboard include the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. The touch cover and type cover accessories don’t replace a good quality conventional keyboard but the portability they offer is well worth the compromise. The optional power cover is also a great option as the included battery extends the battery life of the Surface.

If you need a cheaper Windows Tablet with a keyboard, the Asus Transformer Book T100TA offers the greatest value. The new version even includes an additional hard drive in the keyboard!

There are many Windows tablets that have optional keyboards available. See the comparison chart above for the complete list.

Best Windows Tablets with a Dock/Docking Station

If you plan to use your Windows based tablet as a desktop computer as well, you should consider tablets that come with a dock or docking station. The Microsoft Surface Pro 3 is my number one choice, although I also like my very own Acer Iconia W700. The W700 is the first Windows based tablet I ever purchased and it’s probably still my favorite.

Best Windows Tablets with GPS

To take advantage of applications and websites that can make use of your current location, consider a Windows Tablet that comes with GPS support. My favorite Microsoft tablet for GPS support is the Asus VivoTab Note 8. Please see the chart above for more options.

Windows 8 Tablets for Business Users

For business users (and other power users), look no further than the Microsoft Surface Pro 3. It’s the closest any Windows tablet has come to replacing a laptop or ultrabook. It features your choice of Intel Core processors, up to 512GB of ram, the highest resolution of any tablet, and a gorgeous 12 inch screen.

Another option I have my eye on is the Lenovo ThnkPad 10 that is coming out in June 2014. It contains some interesting feature like 3G/4G, NFC, the latest Intel Atom processor and 10 hours of battery life. I plan to get both the Surface Pro 3 and the ThinkPad 10. Keep an eye out for both reviews.

Which Windows Tablet Do I Own?

I wanted to love the original Microsoft Surface Pro. I absolutely loved the Touch Cover accessory. Always having a light weight keyboard with my Windows tablet would have been a huge plus. I also like the included stylus. Unfortunately, the high price and short battery life of the Microsoft Surface Pro was the deal breaker for me. I equally didn’t find the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 compelling for the same reasons.

Instead of getting a Surface, I purchased the Acer Iconia W700. The included dock and Bluetooth keyboard allows me to use the device as a workstation when I’m at home. When I purchased, the Acer Iconia, it was also the fastest, and the longest lasting Intel core Windows 8 Tablet available. I am actually able to play Half Life on the Acer Iconia W700. Another thing to note is that newer versions of this tablet includes a keyboard case. While it’s not as elegant as the Windows Surface Tablets, the W700 has been a great device for me.

One more thing about the Acer Iconia W700. Since it’s over a year old, the device can be found for pretty cheap these days. So Instead of buying a new, Atom based Windows Tablet, consider spending a little more for the W700. Save even more money by buying a W700 from eBay or Craigslist.

What about Windows RT Tablets?

I generally do not recommend Windows RT tablets. This is mainly due to the fact that Windows 8 Tablets sell for the same amount of money, offer comparable battery life, yet offer much more in terms of app compatibility. While I do understand the need to have a Windows tablet OS that is more secure, doesn’t require a heavy duty processer, and offers great battery life, I think it’s too late for Windows RT. I believe people that don’t need or want a Windows 8 based tablet will just buy an iPad or Android Tablet instead. Developers aren’t going to support Windows RT because most people think the OS is going to die.

Can merging Windows RT and Windows Phone help? Maybe. It would help if Microsoft would change the name of the converged platform to something that would avoid confusing consumers into thinking it’s traditional Windows. Maybe they should call the new platform wOS or msOS? lol

  1. thank you very much for putting this together and maintaining it. VERY HELPFUL for me, as I’m planning to migrate from a full featured android tablet to Windows. Some features that we take for granted in Android world (GPS is one example) is not necessarily available for Windows tabs. Good to know :)

    • Good to know this as well. Thanks to Quentin for this, and others for sharing info.
However, are there any 8-inch, Windows 8 tablets with SIM option (particularly in India) ?
If yes, it might be a better and secure option for Data transmission (particularly from field) ?

  2. Any reviews or comparisons with tough tablets? Motion R12 / Getac F110 / Panasonic FZ-A1

  3. Thanks a lot for that chart. I’m about to buy some tablet and looking for one with the Windows. Actually I want some low budget device so I i’ll try to folow your advice and check the Iconia device. Best regards.

  4. nice tablet comparison!

  5. Why no mention of the Dell Venue of Toshiba Encore tablets?

  6. Nice comparison mate ! This table sorts out the best tablets from the rest .

  7. Any reason for not including the HP Omni 10?

  8. The price changes too frequently. it is hard to compare the value. I think the Asus Transformer T100 is great.

  9. Great comparison, extremely detailed! thanks so much

  10. What about now obsolete Dell Latitude 10 and replacement Venue 8 and 11?

  11. I love your comparison. Will you get a chance to update it soon? I’m actually looking for a Bay Trail powered tablet with 8 or 8.1 Pro, full size USB and 3g/4g . Any ideas? I’ve currently got the Thinkpad 2 but it’s not happy with the 8.1 upgrade.
Thanks for your hard work, BTW

    • This is absolutely a fine work I really appreciate it

Using the videos is cool for comparison .. And top 10 is also nice

      Keep it up

      thanks

  12. I have been waiting quite some time for tablets to get to the point where they are more oriented toward serious business use and could actually replace a laptop. I would accept nothing less than a unit with a 256 GB SSD. The new surface pro 2 is likely my best bet due to the available 256 and 512 gb options. By the time you get the surface pro 2 with a 512 gb drive and a battery-keyboard and docking station, you’ve spent 2200.00. Seems pretty steep considering it should be obsolete in all of 6 months. Therefore, it may be worthwhile waiting for some of the competition to offer the same and drive down some of the prices.

  13. I’m looking for a tablet to use for business travel and I’d like to be able to connect it to my HD TV via a
HDMI connector (to use NetFlix). I need to create and edit MS Excel and Word docs.
I need a USB port and keyboard.

Can you help with a recommendation?

    • Do you need a tablet right away? Right now I think Windows Tablet consumers should wait until a few second generation tablets are released.

I think the Dell Venue 11 Pro is compelling but it’s not available yet.

I haven’t tested the Surface Pro 2 but I suspect it won’t be at the top of my list.

  14. Great list, just one problem I noticed, you have microSD listed on most models but seeing as this format maxed out at 2gb I would bee surprised if any of them actually used it. It would be highly beneficial if you could list the tablets as being microSDHC or microSDXC some consumers may not understand the difference but SDXC is far superior both in data transfer rates and card sizes microSDCH tops out at around 24MB/s whereas SDXC is hundreds of MB/s, SDHC maxes out at 32 gigs and SDXC can address 2TB. There are already 64 GB microSDXC cards and 256GB full sized ones. I understand that the data may be hard to find, perhaps you could put a microSDHC? when it cannot be determined. With such low memory options on allot of these tablets and no way to upgrade the hdd in most of them which type of sd slot they have is very important to consumers who understand the issue.

    Tablets that are microSDXC
    Surface pro
    Surface pro 2
    ASUS Taichi
    ASUS Vivo Tab Smart
    Samsung ATIV Tab 3
Acer Iconia W510 – reported working not on spec sheet
    Samsung ATIV Smart PC
    Lenovo IdeaTab Lynx

I would also recommend pruning the list, Windows RT is not really windows and should not be counted as a windows tablet. Touch screen notebooks with bases permanently connected to the screen I would call something other than a tablet perhaps a convertible. With allot of nice tablets coming in the next few days your list will get quite cluttered unless you become a little selective and I think keeping it to pure tablets would be a good way to do that.

  15. Why aren’t any Dell tablets listed??

  16. This might be a really stupid question but…..How would one load things onto the tablet if all I have is software from CDS/dvds that I paid for such as photo software? I saw that they sent a reinstall disk???? How would you load that if needed when these tablets don’t have DVD/CD Drives?

    • If the tablet has usb ports then an external dvd drive is a fairly cheap option. Using a “normal” computer you could also copy the files from the dvd onto a thumb drive.

You can get more exotic with virtual drives or using shares on a windows pc but the first 2 options are probably easiest.

  17. It would be useful to breakdown the Windows 8 spec further into Std and Pro.

  18. I mean which others have built in GPS?

    • I would like to see this as well, but not many will have this, perhaps an other features row that could include things like fingerprint reader and swappable batteries.

  19. dell latitude 10, toughpad fz-g1, any others?

  20. Quentin… you sir, ROCK!!!! Thanks for this great table…. was exactly what I needed!

  21. Any thoughts on the Fujitsu q702 and the Gigabyte s1185 vs say the surface pro or the Samsung ATIV?

  22. What do you think is the best tablet batter life wise and longevity. I got the Surface Pro and sadly the battery lasts 4 hours…. I am really considering returning it. For example last night I turned it on to play some music, and it died really fast. I feel that with Haswell and it’s power efficiency we should be seeing some really good tablets lasting long. I liked the split envy as the battery life supposedly is 14 hrs. Have you tested this?

    • In general, I tell people to wait for the next generation of Windows Tablets instead of buying one today. New Windows Tablets featuring the Haswell processor will provide a good balance of performance, price, and battery life.

If you really want to buy an Intel based Windows Tablet today, the Acer Iconia W700 offers the best battery life (around 7 hours).

If you want an atom based tablet, there are many choices. I like the Acer Iconia W3 since it’s cheap, long lasting, and portable. Plus it includes MS Office. The screen sucks though.

  23. Good job in compiling the report.. Both Surface RT & Surface Pro comes with Office built right-in.. In fact, all Windows Tablets comes with Office built-in.. The report shows No Office present in Pro and the rest, which is not true..

    • Looking to enter the techno world of pc’s but I have a limited budget to the tune of about $400.00. My laptop is in non-working order so I would like something that can replace that with other attractive features that will be helpful for a small business. Any suggestions… I might mention that this purchase must be made at Staples as this is the amount of the replacement cost that they offered me. Thanks for all your effort in collecting data! It would be great if you could point me in the right direction. Blessings!

    • I have Surface Pro and Surface Pro 2. Neither had Office preinstalled.

  24. Hi thanks for share a huge tablets list. i like samsung galaxy 8.0.

  25. Your table lists the Asus VivoTab Smart as having a stylus/digitizer pen included. That is not correct. Bummer. It would be a perfect cheap tablet with the pen.

  26. Are you still updating this chart? Weights for all devices would be helpful. Thanks!

  27. How about the Razer Edge and Edge Pro?

    • I didn’t include the Razer since it wasn’t all that well received. If I can figue out how to add more devices without stretching out the page, I may add this device.

      • Page is already stretched on my screen (1600×1200) so don’t let that slow you down.

        • Agreed… I’m using a Razer Edge Pro for my business and I gotta say…. I’m liking it a lot.

          • I’m a bit late to the discussion, but I have to add a point for the Razer Edge (pro) I can’t believe other companies like ASUS and Gigabyte haven’t jumped on board with the idea of gaming tablets. The Surface Pro 3 was definitely a let down (borrowed one for the purpose of comparing my gaming/work/travel habit between the devices). The SP3 is dead to me…

  28. The chart is unique -and great!- but it’s becoming a little crowded and difficult to read. Could you please make 2 charts, one tor core and a separate one for atom processors? Because the important different price range (and performance) beween Core and Atom powered tablets it seems better to separate them. Thanks for the work done so far and for the continuous update.

  29. Sharon Stenhouse

Awesome chart Quentin, thanks. My son currently has a Nexus tablet, but have to update for high school next year. Heading overseas shortly and trying to decide to get now or wait… School recommends the ASUS VivoTab or the Dell Latitude 10 tablet. I was leaning towards your recommended Asus W700 so he can use for high resolution games and everything he does. He does have a really good laptop also though. Thoughts – wait or jump in now to get a cheaper deal from Singapore? We are in Australia.

    • If you don’t mind paying extra, I would definitely get the Acer W700 over anything else that is currently shipping. Make sure you get the newer one that comes with a keyboard case!

The second option would be to wait for a second generation tablet that uses the Haswell processor.

Option 3a and 3b would be the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 or the Asus VivoTab Smart.

All of these tablets have their own pros and cons. At least with the W700 you get performance, battery life, a dock, and a keyboard.

  30. Although its undocumented, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700t (Model XE700T1C-A02US as sold by the Microsoft Store) has a built-in GPS sensor. When turned on in the PC Settings ( identified as GNSS under wireless ) it provides real satellite acquired data to the Windows Location Services. I’ve verified that its working as it provided real-time speed and altitude information to a Windows-8 ready navigation program while driving. Older navigation programs will not work as the new Windows Location Services do not provide NMEA data through a serial port. There is built-in Broadcom GPS chip in the unit and it shows up in device manager.

  31. I have some software that only works with Windows, mainly require tablet for work, music and some apps. Prefer rough and tough stuff. Acer, Asus, Samsung or Microsoft? Shall I wait for new releases? Also require 3 G or the dongle ( USB) for an internet SIM card. Will Office 2013 be installed in Asus, Acer

  32. Very Helpful Info packed into 1 page! :] thanks! if it’s ok, can u pls add the Asus Vivotab Smart variant? :] More Power!

  33. Which tablet with win8 pro includes built-in GPS ?

  34. We have a Demo HP ElitePad which does not appear on your list. It is a business grade tablet which, combined with the dock for it, would be a workstation replacement option for general users. The only downside is the 1280x resolution which was apparently deliberately chosen for legacy business apps that may not like the higher standard screen res. If they bump up the screen res, it will be a winner. The dock supports 4 usb ports for standard keyboard and mouse users plus video ports for twin screen operations. Unfortunately the HP Envy does not fit this dock.

  35. I’m tryng to figure out which way to gowith a Win8 tablet/hybrid.  I want Win8Pro, not RT, so that narrows the field a bit.  I love the surface Pro but am concerned about the usefulness of the 10″ screen to do spreadsheets and te like.  I’m trying hard to find ONE of these units that will give me the most “laptop-like” experience but still give me the flexibility of a tablet when I want one.  I’ve been looking for a list like yours for a while now, thanks for continually updating it!

  36. Cool, you have done a lot of work to get all the Windows 8 Tablet information at one place. Thanks for it.

  37. window 8 is very amazing tablet for android based tablet

  38. Thanks very much for the very useful comparison table (and keeping it updated)! I’m just getting into the tablet scene/choices and this is super handy.

  39. This says it’s continuously updated.  When was the chart last updated?

    •  I have a new chart ready but WordPress is choking on it because it’s so big.  I’m now trying to figure out how to display a large table in WordPress.  I may have to * gasp * create a separate HTML page!

  40. Win8 is awesome and tablets are innovative, I don’t understand all the bad vibes on the market for MS products

  41. I think the two acer machines are awesom for their price but the best of all these tablets will be MS SURFACE PROOO Only bomer is hy cost little battery life

  42. I was happy to see that someone made a comparison list but did not find the samsung series 7 slate (i5).  If you do not include it in a future comparison list which tablet listed do you think has similar if not the same specs?  Thanks

  43. Goodness it’s hard to find out which tablets have GPS built-in.

  44. It would be great if you could also include in the chart the information about pen input support, weights and dimensions. Especially weights – that would be very helpful. Thank you. Great job, by the way!

  45. after 13 days just returned an ASUS Vivo RT. (It had a Mini HDMI & USB ports) Excellent tablet design, great keyboard (free @ Staples), incredible battery life, particularly when augmented with the doc, but RT is a killer. Mr Moore, thanks for your comparisions.

    •  I use the Microsoft Surface RT mostly for browsing on the go.  But I am looking forward to the Windows 8 tables from Acer and Samsung.  I ordered the Acer Iconia W700 a few weeks back and I plan to order the Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro today.  I expect them to ship in the next week or so, ahead of Black Friday.

  46. sony duo 11?? tab 20?

  47. Do you know which of these models will come in Windows 8 professional?

    •  I updated the Windows 8 Tablet comparison chart tonight and I have yet to see any tablet shipping with Windows 8 Professional.  I did see that Dell allows you to add Win8 Pro as a low price option.

  48. I think the Asus Iconia W510 and Lenovo IdeaTab Lynx’s keyboard dock will give an extra 8-10 hours of battery life.

    • Thanks for sharing such useful list. Having gone through this list, I got an overall idea about choosing the right device for me.

  49. Samsung Smart PC only have 64 gb ssd, and samsung smart pc pro only have 128 gb ssd.

  50. SurfaceRT has 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0

    • Thanks. I will be updating the chart shortly.

      • I need something for work travel that runs Windows 8 or 8 Pro (cannot be RT) fast. Not concerned with battery life, so thought the Surface Pro looked best- I need fast & would like nice screen. But I absolutely need a keyboard (& have heard need the stylus). I am very confused as people selling these on ebay new/sealed say are telling me have to buy keyboard separately? I’m having a LOT of trouble finding out what these all actually come with, both on ebay & manufacturer site. (Glad have a start with your chart!!!)
I had a acer w500 & it ran SLOW SLOW SLOW & fubared so bad Squaretrade sending me a check, so hesitant to get another Acer, plus the docking of the keyboard was not stable at all.
I guess a yr has gone by- recommendations anyone? This is for reviewing and coding docs for work but want to be able to stream netflix etc & check a LOT of email from several accts.
        Any advice appreciated!!!
