Best Windows Tablets Under $500

Looking for the best Windows Tablet under $500? Want to know which Windows 8 Tablet you should purchase? There are a couple compelling options in this price range. Options include the Asus VivoTab Smart and the Acer Iconia W3. If you are willing to spend a little more, you might consider the Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2. Check out the article, Best Windows Tablets Under $500 to see what I recommend.
Best Price for Windows 8 Tablets
If you are totally interested in the lowest price, consider the Acer Iconia W3. At a retail price of $379, it has the best price we’ve seen so far for a new Windows 8 Tablet.
Windows 8 Tablets with Special Features
In the special features department, look no further than Microsoft’s own Microsoft Surface. The Microsoft Surface tablets come with the innovative accessory called Touch Cover. It doubles as a protective cover for the device and as a keyboard with touch pad. This clever accessory will ensure that the MS Surface serves as a productivity device as well as a content consumption device.
Windows 8 Tablets for Power Users
For power users, consider the top of the like Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro. It will feature an Intel Core i5 processor, 256GB of SSD storage, an 11.6″ screen with 1920×1080 resolution, USB 3.0, and a ton more features. If you really want an high end tablet PC, check out the Asus Taichi. It features dual displays and an Intel Core i7 processor. This tablet may be more powerful that your current desktop! I’m a bit skeptical about possible uses for the dual displays. I look forward to learning how people will use them.
Which Windows Tablet Do I Own?
I wanted to love the Microsoft Surface Pro. I loved absolutely love the Touch Cover accessory. Always having a light weight keyboard with my tablet would have been a huge plus. I also like the included stylus. Unfortunately, the short battery life of the Microsoft Surface Pro was the deal breaker for me. I’m hopeful that the Microsoft Surface Pro 2 will fair better in terms of battery life.
My second choice, which turned out to be my first choice, is the Acer Iconia W700. The included dock and Bluetooth keyboard allows me to use the device as a workstation when I’m at home. The Acer Iconia is also the fastest, and the longest lasting Intel core Windows 8 Tablet available. I am actually able to play Half Life on the Acer Iconia W700. Another thing to note is that newer versions of this tablet include a keyboard case.
I expect the next generation of Windows 8 Tablets to be more compelling in terms of price and performance, when compared to the first generation tablets. But until the new tablets start shipping, I believe the Acer Iconia W700 is the best available Windows 8 Tablet. Check out my Acer Iconia W700 Unboxing Video:
Windows RT: The Other OS
If you are interested in the newest addition to the Windows Operation System line up, consider one of the Windows RT based tablets. Windows RT tablets should be cheaper and longer lasting than the Windows 8 tablets. These devices should be able to run apps comparable to what’s available on an iPad. Note that since these devices do not run the full version of Windows 8, some of your favorite apps may not be available on RT devices.
Available Windows RT tablets include the Microsoft Surface RT, the Asus Vivo RT, and the Samsung ATIV Tab. If priced correctly, these devices should compete well with the iPad and the best Android Tablets. However, with Windows 8 based tablets now in the $500 range, I have to wonder if consumers will just spend a little more money and get a tablet that can run all of the apps they currently use.

Although its undocumented, the Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro 700t (Model XE700T1C-A02US as sold by the Microsoft Store) has a built-in GPS sensor. When turned on in the PC Settings ( identified as GNSS under wireless ) it provides real satellite acquired data to the Windows Location Services. I’ve verified that its working as it provided real-time speed and altitude information to a Windows-8 ready navigation program while driving. Older navigation programs will not work as the new Windows Location Services do not provide NMEA data through a serial port. There is built-in Broadcom GPS chip in the unit and it shows up in device manager.
Can you add screen brightness to the comparision. and also if the micro usbs are usb3.0 or not.
I have some software that only works with Windows, mainly require tablet for work, music and some apps. Prefer rough and tough stuff. Acer, Asus, Samsung or Microsoft? Shall I wait for new releases? Also require 3 G or the dongle ( USB) for an internet SIM card. Will Office 2013 be installed in Asus, Acer
Very Helpful Info packed into 1 page! :] thanks! if it’s ok, can u pls add the Asus Vivotab Smart variant? :] More Power!
Which tablet with win8 pro includes built-in GPS ?
Asus Vivotab Smart. I have it and love it.
We have a Demo HP ElitePad which does not appear on your list. It is a business grade tablet which, combined with the dock for it, would be a workstation replacement option for general users. The only downside is the 1280x resolution which was apparently deliberately chosen for legacy business apps that may not like the higher standard screen res. If they bump up the screen res, it will be a winner. The dock supports 4 usb ports for standard keyboard and mouse users plus video ports for twin screen operations. Unfortunately the HP Envy does not fit this dock.
I’m tryng to figure out which way to gowith a Win8 tablet/hybrid. I want Win8Pro, not RT, so that narrows the field a bit. I love the surface Pro but am concerned about the usefulness of the 10″ screen to do spreadsheets and te like. I’m trying hard to find ONE of these units that will give me the most “laptop-like” experience but still give me the flexibility of a tablet when I want one. I’ve been looking for a list like yours for a while now, thanks for continually updating it!
Right now I think the best tablet option is the Acer W700, especially if it’s it comes with the new keyboard case. Let us know which one you get!
Can you add screen brightness to the comparision. and also if the micro usbs are usb3.0 or not.
Cool, you have done a lot of work to get all the Windows 8 Tablet information at one place. Thanks for it.
Thanks for the comment. More updates coming soon.
window 8 is very amazing tablet for android based tablet
Thanks very much for the very useful comparison table (and keeping it updated)! I’m just getting into the tablet scene/choices and this is super handy.
This says it’s continuously updated. When was the chart last updated?
I have a new chart ready but WordPress is choking on it because it’s so big. I’m now trying to figure out how to display a large table in WordPress. I may have to * gasp * create a separate HTML page!
Win8 is awesome and tablets are innovative, I don’t understand all the bad vibes on the market for MS products
I think the two acer machines are awesom for their price but the best of all these tablets will be MS SURFACE PROOO Only bomer is hy cost little battery life
I was happy to see that someone made a comparison list but did not find the samsung series 7 slate (i5). If you do not include it in a future comparison list which tablet listed do you think has similar if not the same specs? Thanks
Goodness it’s hard to find out which tablets have GPS built-in.
Asus Vivo Tab Smart
It would be great if you could also include in the chart the information about pen input support, weights and dimensions. Especially weights – that would be very helpful. Thank you. Great job, by the way!
after 13 days just returned an ASUS Vivo RT. (It had a Mini HDMI & USB ports) Excellent tablet design, great keyboard (free @ Staples), incredible battery life, particularly when augmented with the doc, but RT is a killer. Mr Moore, thanks for your comparisions.
I use the Microsoft Surface RT mostly for browsing on the go. But I am looking forward to the Windows 8 tables from Acer and Samsung. I ordered the Acer Iconia W700 a few weeks back and I plan to order the Samsung Ativ Smart PC Pro today. I expect them to ship in the next week or so, ahead of Black Friday.
sony duo 11?? tab 20?
Do you know which of these models will come in Windows 8 professional?
I updated the Windows 8 Tablet comparison chart tonight and I have yet to see any tablet shipping with Windows 8 Professional. I did see that Dell allows you to add Win8 Pro as a low price option.
I think the Asus Iconia W510 and Lenovo IdeaTab Lynx’s keyboard dock will give an extra 8-10 hours of battery life.
Samsung Smart PC only have 64 gb ssd, and samsung smart pc pro only have 128 gb ssd.
SurfaceRT has 802.11n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0
Thanks. I will be updating the chart shortly.
