Convertible Laptop Pros
There are quite a few benefits to owning a convertible laptop versus a separate laptop and tablet. Advantages include:
- Cost: While a laptop tablet hybrid may cost more than a typical laptop, you should expect a convertible laptop to be cheaper than buying both a laptop and a tablet. You will also save money on buying fewer cases, cables, extra power adapters, and other accessories.
- One Device Instead of Two: Having one hybrid laptop device instead of a separate laptop and tablet means all of your documents, music and video files, browser favorites, etc. are all on one machine. There’s no need to sync data between multiple devices. You also have the benefit of carrying fewer devices, fewer charge cables, fewer accessories, etc.
- Portability: Hybrid Laptops are generally lighter than convention laptops so they will be easier to carry around. For devices that have a detachable keyboard, you can maximize portability when you leave the keyboard at the office, at home, or in your book bag.
- Battery Life: Since convertible laptops will most often feature Intel Atom or low power Intel Core processors, we expect to see these devices to have good battery life. This will be especially true in cases where the detachable keyboard contains an additional battery.
Convertible Laptop Cons
There are some drawbacks to convertible laptops. Disadvantages include:
- Size and Weight: When using these laptop hybrids in tablet mode, expect the device to feel heavy and bulky. One-hand operation may be a chore, if not impractical. Of note, the Lenovo ThinkPad 10 has an case accessory that contains a hand strap to aid in holding the device.
- Performance: For the convertible laptops with a detachable keyboard (i.e., not a flip form factor), the computing components and battery are behind the screen. This may limit the device’s potential CPU and GPU processing power as fitting high performing components in a tight space my be problematic.
- Price: Convertible Laptops may be more expensive that comparable laptops and definitely more expensive than comparable tablets.
Cheap Convertible Laptops
If your biggest priority is price, your best convertible laptop options include the ASUS Transformer Book T100TA and Acer Aspire Switch 10. Both can be had in the $300 – $400 range. Of the two, I’d probably go with the Asus since I haven’t heard much about the Acer.
Best Convertible Laptop with a Stylus, Digitizer Pen
If you want a convertible laptop with a stylus or digitizer pen, your best choice right now is the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 or the Lenovo ThinkPad 10. Hopefully more hybrid laptops will support stylus pen input but right now the available options are slim.
Which Hybrid Laptop do I Own?
As of this writing, I have the Microsoft Surface Pro 3 on pre-order. I also plan to look at the Lenovo ThinkPad 10 as well as the new Asus Transformer Books when they come out. Until a receive one of the new convertible laptops, I’m still hanging in there with my Acer Iconia W700.
